Jackson Hospital promotes Diabetes awareness with Taste of the Season
Free, annual diabetic program and holiday dinner with all the trimmings

November 14, 2017 Marianna, FL -  Jackson Hospital joins the United Nations recognition of  November 14th as World Diabetes Day.  The date is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin, Nobel laureate, medical scientist, and painter.

All of November, however, is set aside as Diabetes Awareness Month.

Those living with Diabetes has increased over time.  The American Diabetes Association website indicates that “Diabetes doubles the risk of heart attack or stroke and can cause kidney failure, blindness, and lower limb amputation.”

According to the International Diabetes Federation, worldwide one in 11 people have Diabetes.  Closer to home, the statistics are equally startling:  In Florida, 11.2% of adults in 2014 had a Diabetes diagnosis.  In Jackson County, 12.4% of adults, age 20 and above have been diagnosed with Diabetes.

The hospital through its Education department is offering a one-of-a-kind, free, public education event called Taste of the Season.  Taste of the Season showcases how those with diabetes can eat tasty, carbohydrate-balanced meals, and still have favorite Holiday foods using basic carbohydrate counting.

This year’s keynote speaker is board certified General Surgeon Dr. Chai Arunakul, FACS, presenting “The Diabetic Foot.”  Following his presentation is Kristina Edwards, RDN/LD, discussing the concept of “Mindful Eating.”

Taste of the Season is Tuesday, December 5th, 5:30pm-7:30pm at the Agricultural Center, 2741 Pennsylvania Avenue, Marianna.  Register to reserve your meal by calling 850.718.2884.  Use Facebook to indicate you are attending and share the event with your friends at https://www.facebook.com/jacksonhospitalmarianna/.

Throughout the year, Jackson Hospital takes an active role partnering with the community to meet its diabetes educational needs.
