Jackson Hospital Hosts “Table-Top” Drill on Ebola Response

Hospital collaborates with local officials

October 16, 2014, Marianna, FL.  Jackson Hospital hosted a “table-top” discussion with representatives from the Jackson County Health Department, Jackson County Emergency Operations, The City of Marianna, JTrans, Jackson County Fire & Rescue, local law enforcement and the VA Community-Based Outreach Clinic.

Hospital CEO, Larry Meese, outlined the meeting’s objectives as highlighting awareness, improving communication and coordination, and engendering trust to share as much information as quickly as possible.  He said, “We know all of us will be engaged and responding together long before outside assistance arrives.”

The exchange of information between the Hospital’s department heads and community participants was designed to disseminate the most current information available to respond to someone with symptoms.   Should such individual present, the hospital could expect to care for them for 24-48 hours before receiving help from other governmental agencies.

The table-top scenario covered a three-day period of caring for a fictitious individual by identifying key points in a response plan:  taking precautions for personnel and equipment, screening patients, isolating and using protective gear, transporting lab samples,  securing additional supplies, and discarding biohazard items.  Mr. Meese said, “Our hospital staff knows how to care for patients; what we want to accomplish with our first response partners is how to identify and isolate persons with symptoms.”

This year Jackson Hospital celebrates 75 years providing healthcare to the greater region.  The Hospital has an active medical staff of 30+ board certified physicians, including its newest physician Dr. Melissa Caraballo, and continues to grow to meet the needs of all citizens in the area.  Jackson Hospital is located at 4250 Hospital Drive, Marianna, FL.  For information on hospital services, visit our website www.jacksonhosp.com.
